English Learning Secret 4

December 12, 2007

english-lang-secrets.jpg

Here is number 4 in my English Learning Secrets series.

KISS (KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!)

Here’s the thing guys. If you listen to native English speakers talking, they always take the easy sentence or phrase, and drop words that are unnecessary. When using the English language simple is good, complex, long phrases and sentences are bad.

As a teacher, it always amazes me when I find students trying to make their sentences as difficult as they can in the belief that it will make them sound better. It doesn’t. It actually makes you sound bad.

The only group of people who use long, complicated sentences are politicians and lawyers. And believe me guys, you do not want to sound like a politician or lawyer.

Here are some examples:

A: Hello, how are you?
B: I am very good thank you. How are you?

A native speaker would say:

A: Hello how are you?
B: Fine thanks and you?

That’s simple example, but “B:”s answer is 5 words less than the non-native speaker’s answer. But as a student of English it makes sense to learn 5 words rather than 9 yes?

So guys, learn less and KISS - KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID

This Week’s Comedy Clip & News

December 7, 2007

Hi guys, I hope the week has been good for you and that everyone is feeling happy today :-)

Here’s some news for you.

In this morning’s classes we were talking about what you do when you feel a little down or depressed. I don’t usually feel down or depressed, but when I do I have several ways of cheering me up. The first is to watch “Top Gear” (mentioned here before) and another, and this may sound a little crazy, I go to the Aston Martin website. (Click the link to see why^^) I just love the sound of an Aston Martin.

I also mentioned to my students about how to become the next Billionaire (US Dollar) All you need is to create the next You Tube, Google or My Space. So for all my Korean students here is the link to buy your own domain name - Click HERE

Then all you need is a good website design. Check this site out for 30 fantastic website designs (Click HERE)

Finally, here is the bit you’ve all been waiting for :-) This week’s comedy clip. This week I want to show you my favourite Mr Bean clip. Enjoy.

Have a great weekend and see you all again soon
